Honouring the victims of the 1949 Soviet mass deportations 2025 • 25. March • 1 min Share Today, we honour the victims of the 1949 Soviet mass deportations. On March 25, 1949, over 90,000 people from the Baltics were torn from their homes and deported to Siberia — 42,300 from Latvia alone, amounting to 2.2% of our population. Families shattered. Lives destroyed. Thousands never returned. The Soviet regime’s crimes still scar our nation. Nearly every Latvian family carries this trauma. And the echoes of that brutality are heard in today’s Russia — the proud successor to Soviet impunity. We remember those the Soviet regime tried to erase — from our land, our history, and our future. We will not forget. Share Latest news View all News Special Importance of the Three Seas Region 2025 • 15.
